You Can(not) Go Your Own Way
After my extensive training in Florida, I considered myself adept at the proper swinging of crystals. With a wand to call my own, I am now qualified to, in Duane and Dr. Davis’s words, “whip out the crystal”.
Before I wandered off to make my fortune, I thought I’d return to Dr. Davis’s clinic and put Excalibur through its paces. And maybe, just maybe, she would let me take her $5,000 crystal for a spin. Would it be 50 times better than mine? I wondered.
At the next clinic there were about thirty people in attendance. That seemed like a good turnout, especially considering that my first time there had been…three. At the time I had thought, If you’re offering free healing and you only get three people to come, you could really work on your marketing.
With the excitement about Master Glenn being in town, the number now swelled to thirty. But because there were people who hadn’t had any basic training in Pranic healing, we weren’t allowed to use crystals. I was incredulous, especially after my big speech about never using my bare hands again!
I pulled Dr. Davis aside and said, “I know you don't know me and I don't want to be disrespectful, but I have a significant amount of my net worth invested in this rock. And it needs to produce income. So I need to get this working quickly or I’ll be in a bad way.”
She laughed and said, “Well, unfortunately, you can't use it here.” Her house, her rules.
So then I thought, Well, there’s a bunch of people I took the class with before. Maybe I can create a “study group” that meets independently to explore crystal healing and see if there’s anything to it.
This was one of the most magical, mystical times of my life. During this six month period, we were chasing various health issues. People would come in feeling unwell and leave happy and joyous.
Around the same time this was going on, Master Glenn decided, as he rather liked New Smyrna Beach, he would come down every month and teach a different class each time. At first I received scholarships, but later I was able to pay my own way. This gave me an accelerated training in Pranic Healing.
Practicing what I learned with my little group, I found my energy work really starting to form. I would receive spirit guidance as I tried out the new techniques. Spirit would say, Well, that’s what they taught you, but THIS is what we want you to do with it!
And I thought to myself, Well, I know where this is going…this is going to get me in trouble!
Sure enough, soon after I realize this, there is a meeting in which they tell us to never ever deviate from the protocols. I had a strong feeling this message was meant for me. Not in the spiritual sense, but because they had heard that somebody was deviating from the protocols. And everybody knew that the deviant was…me.
But then…later on the meeting, they said Pranic Healing is constantly evolving. I raised my hand. “You can't have it both ways; in order for a practice to evolve, somebody has to deviate from the protocols, right?”
The lady said something along the lines of, Well, the masters are allowed to deviate from the protocols, but not the peons. Meaning…me.
The Masters Tell Me Where to Go
This period of accelerated training was a fun and transformative journey. Everything seemed to be lining up for me, finally.
One day, Master Glenn asks the class if anybody had a question of where, geographically, they should be living and working. I raised my hand. By now, he knows me. “John, what’s up?”
I described how well things were going for me in Florida at that moment, and how grateful I was for the opportunity. But now, with my father getting up in age and having health issues, I was wondering if I should be spending more time with him in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He invited me to the front of the room. As I was walking up, I had Florida vs. Arizona running through my mind. Then Spirit reminded me about the third option. I told Master Glenn that my wife wanted to move to some place in California, a town called Walnut Creek. I didn’t know anything about it, other than inland somewhere in Northern California.
He asked me to sit down in the front of the room and picture in my mind each location, one at a time. While I did this, he would measure my crown chakra. The growth of my crown chakra would indicate where the Masters wanted me to go and practice Pranic Healing. You could say it was like a spiritual Applause-o-meter.
I was thinking, I don't know if I believe in that. However, I knew before me was a room full of people who wanted me to stay in Florida. So to throw them off the scent, I decided to go with Scottsdale first, putting family responsibilities first.
Thinking about Scottsdale and my father, I hear the group going “ooh, ooh, hoo, ooh.” I opened my eyes, and he says, “Wow, your crown chakra really glowed there, so the Masters are saying it is a good place for you. That is where they want you to go.”
At that moment, if you had asked me where I was going, I would have said Scottsdale, Arizona. Spend time with my father. Not really sure about the whole Pranic Healing thing over there.
He then told me to think of the second location. So I thought of that place in California that I knew nothing about. Wall Creek or something. Master Glenn let out a noise. “Ooooh…hooo…ooooh.” It sounded like he was having some sort of seizure or something.
I opened my eyes to see if he was okay. He looked like he was in a stereo commercial getting blasted. Then I look at the other people in in the class and they all look like they're in the same stereo commercial, getting blasted by some kind of outrageous sound.
He says, “I've never experienced anything like this. Your crown chakra just filled the room!” I was thinking to myself, What is he talking about? I’m kind of freaking out, wondering what all this had to do with me and Walnut Creek
Then he has me think of the third location. By this point, I wasn’t able to think clearly and had to calm myself. The third option was staying in Florida.
He says “Oooooh” once more. “We’ve never had this result before…three affirmatives.”
However, the second location was exponentially larger than the other two. So that's really where they want you to go: Walnut Creek, California.
So I called my wife and said, “Honey, guess what? We’re going to visit Walnut Creek, California.” She said, “That took an act of God.” I said, “Yeah, pretty much.”
And so we came out here to Walnut Creek, California. My wife had family here and she really liked it in Walnut Creek. So she she wanted me to be happy and she wanted to get the heck out of Florida because of all the history from my Accelerated Karmic Burn, which is a story for another day.
She thought Arizona might be a little too hot, which I couldn’t argue with. Everybody in Arizona says, but it's a dry heat. Of course, “dry heat” means 120 only feels like 115.
California Dreamin’
To prepare for our visit to Walnut Creek, my wife did some research. She found various groups I could plug into right away. There was this place called Unity of Walnut Creek, a sort of non-denominational church. There was was a “Course in Miracles” group that met nearby. And there was actually a Pranic Healing clinic! This seemed like my kind of place.
With all this research done, I was able to hit the ground running. I connected with a group of people who shared things in common with me, such as at the SRF Center for Spiritual Awareness.
The first time I went to the Pranic Healing clinic, I told them I was visiting from Florida. They asked me what kind of training I had done, so I listed the seven classes that I'd taken so far.
They were gobsmacked! They said, “Oh my God, you must have been doing this for years. You're a semi-master!” I said, “No, no, I've only been doing this for seven months.”
They were incredulous. “What? How can you get that much training in seven months?” I told them about Master Glenn coming down to enjoy the beach and each time teaching a different course. Whenever he came down I took his course.
They said, “Well, that just doesn't happen.” I said it happened for me.
She asked if she could have me treat their most advanced cases because I had more training than most of the current practitioners at the clinic. I was surprised and honored. But I had just one question first: “Are we allowed to use our crystals?”
They burst out laughing. The woman said to me, “Honey, this is California. Babies are born with crystals in their hands!”
Apparently I was in the right place at the right time. These Californians were singing my tune, and from the same hymnal. And so I began my career as a Pranic Healer, and looked for an office where I could set myself up.
Redwood trees. I’d never seen one before, until I arrived in Walnut Creek. The first time I saw one, I just had to hug it. Sure enough, behind Unity of Walnut Creek were two redwood trees. I thought, That is where I want to work…between the redwoods out in nature. Fortunately, the weather in Walnut Creek is pretty nice year-round.
But I didn’t feel comfortable just claiming the back yard as my office. I asked Reverend David of Unity for his blessing. It wasn’t enough to have permission (or even forgiveness after the fact), I felt like I needed his actual blessing. So he made it official: I was to heal the sick under the redwoods behind the church.
I Wanna Be…Jack Hammer
One day, a woman who worked at the front desk came back to my stand of redwoods. “Do you know Master Stephen Co? I explained that Master Co was the West Coast guy, based in Los Angeles, and Master Glenn Mendoza was the East Coast guy, based in New York/New Jersey.
“Well, guess what? Master Co is coming here to Unity to teach a class on Panic Healing!” I said, “No, no, that’s not what Master Co teaches. He teaches Pranic Healing. That’s what I do. I’m pretty sure it’s Pranic Healing, because if you do it really well, you can actually reverse panic.” Pranic is just another word for energy.
So I thought it was very auspicious that two communities I had been involved with were coming together in Walnut Creek. I looked forward to Master Co’s visit with anticipation and tried to do my part to facilitate it. But I, as the guy visiting from Florida, was really kind of an outsider in the local Pranic Healing group. After all, I still had my Cuban guayabera shirt! (OK, probably not actually wearing it.)
Sure enough, the big day came and Master Stephen Co entered the hall. They were introducing him to each of the Pranic Healers lined up to meet him. At the end of the line was me. I had sort of inserted myself into the lineup withing prior permission. When he reached me, no introduction was forthcoming, and we stood there in awkward silence. We just stared at each other.
So I introduced myself. I said, “Master Stephen Co, my name is John Ortiz. I'm the Pranic Healer here at Unity of Walnut Creek.” A surprised look came over his face, as in, Why wasn’t your name mentioned? But he left it at that.
Master Co’s talk was enchanting. He was funny, intelligent, good looking…the whole Hollywood package. Later on, they passed out a list of Pranic Healers in the area, but I wasn’t on the list! My ego was hurt…I mean, this was actually my community where I was practicing! But Spirit said to chill out. When I looked around the room, I saw all my clients, friends, and family who I’ve been working on, and I wasn’t worried anymore.
So, I did feel kind of like an outsider even in that very specialized group. I thought maybe I should introduce myself to Stephen Co more directly by taking one of his classes.
Not too far in the future, he was teaching a basic Pranic Healing class in Scottsdale, Arizona. This was perfect because I could visit my father AND meet the Pranic Healing community of Arizona. After all, at the time I was still technically visiting from Florida. It was still possible that we might decide to move to Arizona, or even back to Florida. Everything was still on the table.
So I signed up for the class, which was actually something I’d already taken. I had a good visit with my father and went to the workshop. Master Co asked us to pair up with a partner. I didn't know anybody, so I randomly pair up with a young man.
He started rubbing his head. I asked him if everything was all right. He explained he had a migraine headache. I was thinking, What did you do, skip breakfast? Did you have too much coffee?
I asked him how long he’d had the headache. His answer shocked me: “Well, six months ago, I had a car accident.”
And I said, “Wait, are you saying that for six months—since the car accident—you’ve had a migraine headache every day?”
And he goes, “Yeah, pretty much.”
I said, “Well, on a scale of one to ten, how bad is it?”
He says, “A good day is a three; a bad day is a ten.”
And I’m thinking, Oh no, no, no, no. I said, “Listen, let’s go to the back of the room and do something, but don’t tell anybody what we’re doing.”
Even though it was a basic Pranic Healing class, I had snuck in my crystals anyway. Surprise, surprise, I know!
So we went to the back corner. One of the things Spirit had taught me—different from the standard protocol—was this energetic jackhammer technique. You hold your crystal as if it were a jackhammer, and you energetically pound as though you’re breaking up condensed energy, and then you sweep it away. Break it up, sweep it away—just like breaking up concrete with a jackhammer. Spirit had shown me that this sped up the process considerably.
So, that’s what I started doing. I began the technique on him, and within a couple of minutes, I felt a presence at my right-hand side. It was Master Stephen Co, standing there with his hand on his chin, watching me.
I was thinking, Oh my gosh, I’m busted! Here I am in the back corner—how did he even know what I was doing? How did he see me? My mind started racing: How much trouble am I in? Is he going to take my crystal? Will I be cast out of Pranic Healing now?
He just stood there, watching me intently. My mind kept racing: What am I going to say when I’m done? I know! I’ll say, ‘This is how we do it on the East Coast.’ Then I thought, No, no, no, he’s good friends with Master Glenn. He would just call him up and say, ‘Hey, Glenn, this John Ortiz is using some strange East Coast techniques.’”
Then I thought, Maybe I’ll say, ‘This is how we do it on the Cosmic Coast’—somewhere between the East Coast and the West Coast. But eventually, I just decided, You came to dance, you might as well dance. So, I kept hammering away, using the technique.
Sure enough, after a few moments—by God’s grace and guidance—the young man said, “My headache is going away! It’s going away!” Then he started hitting his head and said, “I can’t make it hurt! This is a miracle!”
The session now over, I was calmly putting my crystals away when Master Stephen Co looked at me and said, simply, “Mr. John Ortiz…” I'm thinking, Oh crap, he knows my name now. I had hoped I might be able to sneak out. Then: “You are a very interesting character.” And with that, he turned on his heels and walked away.
What was going to happen next? I thought I’d hear something like: “Young grasshopper, you must turn in your crystal and leave the building!” But Spirit just said, Calm down, chill out. Keep an eye on Master Co.
At the next break, I looked around for Master Co. What was he doing?
He was holding a crystal and doing energetic jack-hammering.
Spirit said to me: Congratulations, thanks to you, the Masters have just evolved Pranic Healing. Oh, don’t mention it!
